Interview Summary

Governor Wetherby continues speaking of his friend and Vice President Alben Barkley after Barkley did not receive the nomination for President in 1952, and how Wetherby persuaded and supported him running for the vacant US Senate seat in 1954. Wetherby recalls his reactions when he heard of his friend's passing, his unsuccessful running to finish Barkley's term. Wetherby reminisces on his relationship with Governor A.B. Chandler, the Democratic Party Machine during this time. Governor Wetherby then compares his government budget to a current model, and expresses his thoughts on corruption in administrations. Continuing his talk on education, Wetherby explains the organization of the Southern Regional Education Board in 1952. During which time, was able to retain veterinary scholarships to out of state universities for Kentucky students, and discusses the tensions between the southern governors to abide by the Supreme Court's ruling of Brown v. Board of Education, 1954. Lastly, Governor Wetherby speaks of the development of the Bookmobile for residents of Kentucky during his administrative term.
