Interview Summary

Marshall Ted Nelson, a former employee of the TVA, begins the interview by discussing how he came to work at the TVA. Nelson's first assignment as a Land Use Specialist is recalled. TVA's role in monitoring private adjacent lands is examined. Issues with TVA's land divestiture practices are also mentioned. Nelson details his role in developing TVA's comprehensive land use planning process and land forecast system. The interviewee's early environmental impact statements and his opinions of the Tellico Dam are illustrated. Changes to the TVA in the 1980s are evaluated. Nelson's work in industrial development is explored. Nelson explains the nature of his work in navigation. The Tennessee River Navigation System and its role in industrial development is considered. Nelson provides examples of how the Tennessee River Navigation System has assisted in industrial development, including the grain industry in Guntersville, Alabama, the A.E. Staley Company in Tennessee, and Boeing in Decatur, Alabama. TVA's Navigation Branch and its respective divisions are recalled. Nelson briefly summarizes his work as River Operations Manager, as well as his accomplishments in the TVA. To conclude the interview, Nelson assesses the changes that occurred to the TVA throughout his career.
