Interview Summary
P. G. Peeples discusses his family background and childhood in Lynch, Kentucky. He talks about Lynch as a coal company town in Harlan County, owned by the U.S. Steel company. He talks about attending a segregated school until his senior year of high school, and talks about how the schools were funded by U.S. Steel. He talks about his experiences in New York City each summer as a teenager which prepared him for challenges he would face later in life, including attending the University of Kentucky. He talks about race relations at UK, and gives examples of racism and discrimination he experienced. He talks about athletics at UK, including racist remarks by fans toward African American players, as well as the death of football player Greg Page and how it affected the other Black students. Peeples discusses UK's negative reputation in regard to racism, and discusses what he believes can be done to improve the environment at UK.Interview Accession
