Interview with Cal Mann, February 26, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Cal Mann served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in North Macedonia from 2017 to 2020, when he was evacuated due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to Peace Corps, Cal had a career in industrial design and was increasingly engaged in volunteer work as he approached retirement. A friend who was a PCV in Tonga helped motivate Cal to apply. Cal’s training cohort was MAK22. Macedonian language, culture, and technical training were conducted in Negotino. Cal’s assignment was in Stip, working with a small non-profit legal assistance organization serving the Roma, a disadvantaged ethnic group. He was also involved in secondary projects with American Corner, a U.S. Embassy program, and Rotary Club. Cal was instrumental in forming a partnership between local Rotary Clubs of Macedonia and Peace Corps North Macedonia. In his free time, Cal hiked and biked extensively with local and Peace Corps friends. In March of 2020 Cal had to evacuate with less than two days’ notice.Interview Accession
