Interview Summary

John Malpede, the founder of the Los Angeles Poverty Department (LAPD) and former collaborator with Appalshop, Inc., discusses his time spent working with Appalshop, Inc. on "RFK in EKY", which was various reenactments of Robert F. Kennedy's tour of Appalachia before his assassination in 1968. He talks about the process of producing the reenactments, as well as various moments in the tour that were focused on and even emphasized, such as hearings regarding the War on Drugs and a speech Kennedy gave at Alice Lloyd College. Malpede also discusses his own journey as a person, a performer, and a political activist, as well as his continuing relationship with people from Appalshop, Inc. and how the production "RFK in EKY" affected his work after the production.
