Interview Summary
Susan Isaacs was born and grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. She has familial ties on her father’s side to Louisville, Kentucky where he was born and grew up, and where her family ran a pawnshop business, but her father became an engineer. She grew up in the Reform tradition and was not bat mitzvahed. She branched off into transcendental meditation before returning to Judaism. She got her B.A. in British and American literature from the University of Iowa in 1977 and a Ph.D. in folklore and ethnography from the University of Pennsylvania. She now lives in Barbourville, Kentucky with her husband, Hugo Freund.Interview Accession
