Interview with Jacqueline Bailey Rojas, February 13, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Jacqueline Bailey Rojas served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Peru from 1970 to 1974, and Chile from 1974 to 1976, working in Education. Rojas was part of the Peace Corps College Degree Program, a 15-month teacher training and Spanish language program at SUNY Brockport. She was assigned to a teacher training school in San Pedro de Lloc and lived in Pacasmayo. Her work also included training in-service teachers in evenings and on weekends. She initiated on-site training for outlying areas and spent her third year teaching for two months in each town. Rojas notes the commitment of teachers, some of who traveled long distances on horseback to attend. She extended for a fourth year and trained special education teachers in Chimbote. Rojas co-authored a teacher guide with other education volunteers in Peru that was later used throughout South America. Her next assignment was in Coquimbo, Chile, where she integrated marine education into the science program. She married a Chilean, and remains close to family there, as well as to her fellow RPCVs.Interview Accession
