Interview with Albert Benjamin "Happy" Chandler, April 16, 1981
Project: A. B. "Happy" Chandler: The Dr. Charles P. Roland Interviews
Interview Summary
Chandler discusses his role in the highway project that was administered during his second administration. There is a provision in Kentucky stating that if there is something that will put Kentucky more than $500,000 in debt, that this has to be agreed upon by the people of Kentucky. Chandler talks about his views on paying throughout the project instead of all at once, an idea that he very strongly supported. Chandler explains his disinterest for the toll roads. Chandler supported public education and showed that he did by raising the per capita wage from $6 to $12 for common schools. He also created the teacher retirement fund and not only had it passed, but also helped it financially twice. He discusses the disagreement between the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville over funding and budget cuts. Chandler talks about his efforts to attract industry for Kentucky, including IBM, Square D, and others. Chandler discusses the development of the UK medical school during his second administration.Interview Accession
