Interview with Laurena Bernabo, April 28, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Laurena Bernabo served in Costa Rica, 2008-2010, in children, youth and family. Her training site was Fátima. The language training was not helpful for preparing her for her work assignment, Laurena said. For example, they learned fairy tales instead of more practical vocabulary. She enjoyed her host family at the training site but had some difficulties with her other host families. She recommended that PC vet host families more carefully. Also she reported several instances where she was subject to grabbing by men on the street. Her first permanent post was Cieneguita. She left that town for Finca 11 when drug lords killed a neighbor. Her projects included holding sex education workshops for 5th graders, creating girls’ groups of 12- to 14-year-olds to explore interests and future options, and raising money to fix up a playground with community involvement. She said she made life-long friends of co-volunteers.
