Interview Summary
Evans Shuff came to the University of Kentucky in the fall of 1906. In this interview he discusses why he chose to attend UK, and his decision to major in mechanical engineering. He discusses the UK engineering department, including the quality of education, and his favorite professors. He talks about President Patterson; his personality, policies, and his retirement the year Shuff graduated.He talks about social events and organizations on campus, including fraternities, literary societies, athletic events, and local hangouts. He discusses trouble caused by students, including a missing student who, it was later discovered, had simply run away, and an incident which resulted in several police officers being injured and students being arrested. He talks about a tradition called the Freshman-Sophomore Flag Rush, which involved students climbing telephone poles, and was quickly abolished.
Shuff discusses how his college education changed his life, and what he would change about his experiences if he could.
