Interview with Anne Weeks, June 14, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Dominican Republic, 1981-1983, Health 1983-1986, Contract Trainer with Entrena

Anne Weeks grew up on Long Island, New York. She went to Catholic schools K-12 and graduated from Ithaca College in Spanish and political science. Anne participated in a student exchange program in Mexico and a Study Abroad program in Guatemala. She was first assigned to the Health Ministry to work with women’s groups in Guatapanal and surrounding communities teaching the health benefits of growing and cooking vegetables. The project had limited success. Anne requested a change to work with the Agriculture Ministry to help communities build cook stoves which she learned about in Guatemala. This became a community affair with much more interaction of participants and diffusion of the value of cook stoves. Anne also worked as a contractor with USAID with the PL480 food program and the Child Survival program. Anne talked about relationships, the change process, and cultural influence in working in the D.R. After her Peace Corps service, Anne was hired as a cultural trainer with Entrena, the Peace Corps training contractor in the D.R.
