Interview Summary
Roger Bollinger, a former TVA employee, begins the interview by describing how he was hired at the TVA. Bollinger's educational background is also explored. Bollinger discusses why the TVA became involved in forestry. Bollinger details his first job in TVA forestry in Asheville, North Carolina. The interviewee provides an overview of the TVA's involvement in fire prevention. Bollinger outlines a joint cooperative program between state governments and the TVA to increase the number of seedlings planted in the Tennessee Valley through a seed salesman program. Bollinger outlines his career at the TVA. Bollinger’s role in the early development and implementation of TVA's mine reclamation program is discussed. The reaction of coal companies to the mine reclamation program, the funding sources, challenges with enforcement, and the procedure for active and abandoned mines are discussed. A history of mineral mining in the region is also given. The effects of TVA and its mine reclamation efforts on state laws and the landscape are evaluated.
