Interview Summary
Sarah Newby was one of the first African American students to attend the University of Kentucky in 1954. She graduated from UK in 1958 with her bachelor's degree and in 1964 with her master's degree. In this interview, she talks about her family and economic background. She talks about commuting to Dunbar High School in Lexington from Nicholasville and discusses the expenses of her education. She talks about how her high school experience prepared her for college and was a factor in why she graduated from college when many of her fellow African American classmates did not. She discusses her expectations when coming to UK, how her experiences compared to those expectations, and her positive and negative experiences at UK.Interview Accession
