Interview with Laura Johansson, December 20, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Laura Johansson served in the Dominican Republic (DR) 1992-1994 in the Community Education program. She also was a PC Environmental Education tech trainer from 1994-1996. Laura’s experiences as a high school exchange student and a college student studying abroad in Latin America, were helpful cultural and linguistic preparations for her PC service in the DR. Her permanent site was in the mountain town of Jarabacoa. In partnership with the Department of Education, she expanded a pilot resource center project to support teachers, which eventually expanded countrywide. She and fellow PCVs also promoted interactive teaching methods through workshops and using recyclable materials. Laura talks about the joy and privilege of PC service. It was a watershed experience that has deeply influenced her personal and professional life since. She is forever grateful to the generous Dominican community and her PCV friends that embraced her as a colleague and as family.
