Interview with Ann Todd Jealous, September 5, 2020
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Ann Todd Jealous was a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines in 1963 – 1965, in the Education Program. Ann, an African American, attended the first high school in Baltimore to be desegregated. She was inspired to join Peace Corps by a John F. Kennedy speech at American University. Tagalog language, culture, physical fitness, and survival skills training was conducted in Hawaii. She was posted in Siniloan, Laguna, as an English and Math teacher at a primary school. During most of her stay, Ann lived with a local family. In addition to teaching, she ran a summer pre-school, wrote an English primer, and developed teacher-training workshops. After completing her assignment, Ann worked for a summer at a Peace Corps Training Center in San Jose, California, helping to train new Philippines volunteers. The interview discusses racial trauma experienced by a recruit in that training group that resulted in his dropping out.Interview Accession
