Interview Summary

Gerald Murray served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic from 1964 through 1966 in the Community Economic Development and Education Programs. Murray applied to Peace Corps after dropping out of the seminary where he was studying to become a Catholic priest. His group, DR-11, trained in Puerto Rico, studying Spanish language, culture, history, and community development. Gerald was assigned to the village of Vallejuelo to work in Community Development. He was evacuated for a time for hepatitis treatment and became reassigned to a village outside of Santo Domingo. In his final months of service, Murray taught English at a new Catholic university in Santiago. After volunteer service, Gerald worked for Peace Corps as a trainer in Puerto Rico for six months, and then returned to the U.S. to continue his education. He studied at Harvard and Columbia, earning a PhD. He spent the rest of his career working in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Murray discusses his Peace Corps experience and also reflects upon the value of Peace Corps service.
