Interview Summary

In this first of a two-part interview, Neil Hackworth (Kentucky League of Cities President [1991], Deputy Executive Director [1995-2010], and former Shelbyville, Kentucky mayor), discusses his family heritage relative to Shelbyville, Kentucky, his childhood, and the racial integration of Shelbyville schools. He talks about his undergraduate career at Kenyon College, his thoughts on the Vietnam War and protests, his experience of basic training at Keesler Air force Base in '68, his academic career in UK's Law school, and his four-year service in the Jag Corps. Hackworth discusses his early career as a young Shelbyville lawyer and the socio-political forces that ultimately motivated him to run for mayor. Additionally, he highlights the social tensions involved in running for office, Shelbyville's Mayor-Council system of government, his goals for the Shelbyville community as mayor, and the general dynamics of Shelbyville politics.
