Interview with Richard James Webster, March 29, 2022

Project: West Chester University: Vietnam Era Oral History Project

Interview Summary

This interview focuses on the experiences of Dr. Richard Webster during his time as a professor at West Chester University, then known as West Chester College. Arriving at West Chester in 1967, he describes the actions of some other professors and the University administration’s response to the war. The article describes the largely conservative view of the school administration and how they feared any professor talking about the war. Dr. Webster describes how he was called before administration numerous times, out of fear that he discussed the Vietnam War during class time, something the administration staunchly opposed. For Dr. Webster, this served as a stressful time, often being caught in between the more radical professors and the more conservative administration. Throughout the interview, Dr. Webster mentions the importance of sticking to scholarship, as the path that guided him through this tumultuous time being an educator in America.
