Interview Summary

Victoria "Vicki" Persinger Lee served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, from 1966 through 1968, in the education program. Lee was inspired to join Peace Corps by John F. Kennedy. She had traveled overseas previously with Experiment in International Living. Lee volunteered for Peace Corps with her husband. Their training cohort received language and culture training on the island of Molokai, Hawaii. Her assignment was on Majuro, the capital of the Marshall Islands. Being the first group of volunteers on Majuro, housing was not available and had to be constructed under the supervision of two architects in their group. Lee’s assignment was as an English teacher for both elementary and high school students. A secondary project was producing and broadcasting a radio program along with a Marshallese friend, with the goal of spreading child care and nutrition information to populations on outer islands. Lee’s son was born in Majuro during their Peace Corps tour.
