Interview with Josh Tanzer, August 28, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Josh Tanzer served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic from 1983 to 1985 in the Small Business Development Program. Josh became interested in Peace Corps after a conversation with the Chancelor at University of Denver, who was a former Peace Corps Country Director. He applied and was invited to be part of a small business finance project in the DR. Josh was assigned to work with ADEMI (The Association for the Development of Enterprises) an organization in Santo Domingo assisting small businesses by making micro loans. Josh worked alongside Dominican counterparts to computerize the loan processing and accounting systems. As his project with ADEMi was coming to completion, Josh requested a transfer to a rural assignment, requiring a 6 month extension of service. He moved to Rio Limpio to work on a World Bank funded latrine project. Josh designed a program whereby the compesinos purchased their latrines on a monthly payment plan. Upon returning to the U.S. he experienced intense reverse culture shock. He feels that his Peace Corps experience was extremely beneficial to his career in business finance.
