Interview Summary

Zakir Khan, a Muslim living in Karachi, Pakistan, begins the interview by recalling his childhood spent in India before the partition. Khan's education, and eventual move to Pakistan as a young adult are discussed. Next, Khan's experiences at Aligarh Muslim University are detailed. The philosophy of the university is found to have been based upon the British educational model. Khan briefly describes his family's settlement in Pakistan as well. The interviewee then elaborates upon university life, and its emphasis on sport. The quality of the education at that time and the city of Aligarh are also assessed. Hindu-Muslim relations prior to the partition and Khan's religious upbringing are the next topics of conversation. Following this, Khan talks of his life after the partition in Pakistan, and his efforts to reform the educational system in that nation, as well as what it means to be a Muslim there. Lastly, Khan's opinions of independence, the partition, and a suitable monument to represent Pakistan are deliberated.
