Interview Summary
Porter G. Peeples, Sr. was the director of the Urban League of Lexington, Kentucky. In this interview he discusses his time as a student at the University of Kentucky during the 1960s. He talks about a fire that was started on campus in protest of discrimination against Black students. He talks about his experiences with racism and harassment while attending UK. He talks about the integration of athletics at UK, including the first two African American football players at the university, and the continued segregation of the basketball team under coach Adolph Rupp. He talks about also facing distrust from the Black community as a UK student. He discusses barriers to the recruitment of Black students, and discusses why some Black students today may be unaware of the discrimination they are facing.Interview Accession
