Interview Summary
Simpson Brown relates his life growing up in Corydon near Henderson (Ky.). Brown's grandparents were slaves, and his father's side of the family was mostly conceived from rape by his grandmother's owners. He knew and played baseball with A.B. "Happy" Chandler as a child. Throughout his life, he worked as a coal miner, for the WPA, and on the school board. He was an advocate for integrated schools, was a member of the African American lodges in Henderson, and was a member of the coal miners union.Interview Accession
