Interview Summary
Bert Francis served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps. In this interview, he talks about graduating from high school and attending Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. He talks about the campus culture, his coursework, and influential professors. He talks about his work in chemical engineering and his work with various types of crystals. He talks about why he began taking extension classes at Purdue University. Francis talks about his decision to join the National Guard in 1955 while attending Union College, and the quality of the training, which he was skeptical of. Francis talks about how he came to join the Marine Corps, and describes in detail his experience at Marine Corps officer boot camp.Interview Accession
