Project: Charles Elmer Barnhart, Jr. Oral History Project
Interview Summary
In this session, Dr. Charles E. Barnhart continues the discussion about the relationship between the National Farm Organization (N.F.O.) and University of Kentucky's College of Agriculture. He says that the Kentucky Farm Bureau and the NFO had completely opposing viewpoints. He talks about how the College of Agriculture dealt with the conflict which started in the late1960's regarding scientific agriculture and subsistence/organic farming. He discusses the impact of this movement forcing the College of Agriculture and the larger scientific agricultural community to rethink the prevailing attitude towards chemicals and practices at the processing plants. Barnhart talks about family farming and agribusinesses in terms of relying on mechanization and the investment required to start a farm operation. He mentions zone restrictions and regulatory facilities for animal production and mentions the issue of "the demise of the family farms" being a concern from a sociological standpoint.Barnhart discusses his philosophy of the land grant college movement. He emphasizes that the agricultural experiment station, the agricultural extension service, and the agricultural instruction educational efforts were all created by different acts of the land grant college act and the idea was to give everybody an opportunity for an education and to get better technology and information that would encourage them to become better farmers. Barnhart mentions his discussions with Harry Caudill regarding the rural heritage of Kentucky. He talks about the relationship between the College of Agriculture and tourism development.
