Interview Summary

Mark Trabing served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Jamaica in 1976 through 1978, in the Education Program. Mark grew up in Santa Cruz California and studied Youth Counseling U.C. Davis. He applied to Peace Corps and accepted an invitation to serve in Jamaica. Training was conducted in Kingston, where he stayed with a host family. Mark was assigned to Port Antonio, Portland Parish, on the northeast coast. Mark’s job was to work with staff at five secondary schools to select and train guidance counselors. This was a new program for Jamaica. Mark was asked to stay on after completing his service to help train incoming PCVs. Upon returning home he attended graduate school at U.C. Davis and had a career in community planning. The interview discusses Mark’s work and life experiences, including a sailing adventure while on leave. He has returned to Jamaica several times. He is currently involved with the Jamaica Trail Project, as well as volunteer projects at home with fellow RPCVs.
