Interview Summary
Dr. Sylvia Y. Ofei, a pediatric gastroenterologist in Lexington, Kentucky is interviewed by Reneé Collins for the I Am Diversity: Women Physicians of Color Oral History Project. In this interview, Dr. Ofei shares details about her childhood in Ghana and the achievements made throughout her educational career. She discusses her time at Ohio State University and later Wright State University. Her move to Lexington, Kentucky is also discussed.Dr. Ofei provides insight into diversity in Kentucky and in the medical field. This conversation also highlights unconscious bias, discrimination, and respecting cultural norms. The roles each of these play in pediatric care is shared. Advancements and changes in healthcare practices, and the research conducted by Dr. Ofei, are detailed as well.
