Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Tana Jones Dugan served as a volunteer secretary in Turkey (1964-1966) and Nepal (1966-1969). Peace Corps had a small, short lived, program for volunteer secretaries who worked in the main offices or regional offices. Tana was one of those volunteers. She talks about her decision to apply to Peace Corps and her family’s reaction. She also discusses her work, living situations, cultural adaptation and travel, in both Turkey and Nepal. She met her husband in Nepal where he was a volunteer and later worked as staff they were able to marry after Tana had finished her service. Tana also talks about the impact of her service and travel on her world view as well as her family. She mentioned that one daughter served as a volunteer in Zimbabwe and another works overseas in UAE.
