Interview Summary
Dr. William Markesbery (Medical School Student, 1960-1964; Professor, Department of Neurology, Pathology, Neurosurgery, Anatomy and Neurobiology; Director, Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, Director, Alzheimer's Disease Center, Commonwealth Chair in Aging, 1972-2010) discusses the development of the Center on Aging, its focus on aging in the nervous system, and how the Center became a leader in studying Alzheimer's disease. In speaking about caring for the elderly, Markesbery criticizes nursing homes and suggests ways to improve them. He also talks about the need for change in the United States' medical system, particularly in creating a system that attracts and retains idealistic physicians.Interview Accession
