Interview Summary
Sarah Hagans was a graduate of the Master's with Initial Certification program (MIC) at the University of Kentucky in 2000. In this interview she discusses her family background, including discussions of her family roots, socioeconomic status, and childhood recreational activities. She talks about her early education, her relationships with white classmates, and her favorite teachers. She talks about her experiences at Berea College for her undergraduate education, double majoring in English and Spanish, studying abroad, and her work with Students for Appalachia.She talks about her decision to attend UK for the Master's with Initial Certification program to obtain her teaching certification. She talks about her advisor in the program, her support system, and whether she faced any discrimination at UK. She talks about the quality of education she received at UK, her career after graduation, and UK's need to create a more welcoming environment for incoming graduate students.
