Interview Summary
Charles Carreras served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Guatemala, from 1963 to 1965, in the Community Development Program. Charles studied Latin American History in college, and had a desire to live and work in Latin America. He was inspired to serve by John F. Kennedy, and applied to Peace Corps while in graduate school. Charles was accepted for group Guatemala III, and trained at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. His assignment was in Guatemala City Zone 7, working in a cooperative program between Peace Corps and CARE, as a facilitator for the School Lunch Program. He was involved in several secondary projects through Comite Mejormiento, a local community betterment committee. Those activities included a youth club and youth sports teams. He tutored English, became treasurer of an adult soccer team, and engaged in community projects through the local Catholic Church. Charles remains in contact with Guatemalan friends and fellow volunteers.
