Interview Summary
Smucker interviewed Riehl about his father David Riehl's business buying quilts from fellow Amish families in Lancaster County and selling them to New York City and Philadelphia quilt dealers. David Riehl was a highly unusual Old Order Amish man, in that he was eager to engage in the commerce of quilts, taking quilts in suitcases to New York City to sell to Madison Avenue dealers. Benuel Riehl also reflects on why Amish were so willing to part with their quilts, which were family heirlooms.Interview Accession
