Interview with Colleen Marchwick, September 6, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Colleen Marchwick served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Morocco, from 1993 to 1995, in the Health sector. She served in the first group sent to Morocco after the program closure due to the Iraq War. Colleen was paired with an older volunteer during her first year where they worked on water chlorination and sanitation projects. Additionally, she worked with a nurse who she would accompany into the countryside. The community liked the nurse and considered her a novelty. Colleen distributed polio drops since she wasn’t trained to give vaccinations. After her language skills improved she discussed birth control with local women. Her upbringing in Minnesota did not prepare her for the cold and preferred the hammam over cold shower in her home. She wrote for the volunteer newsletter and would come to Rabat to produce it. After service Colleen was a recruiter in the Chicago office.
