Interview Summary

This interview with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) employee Barry Turner begins with a discussion of when and where he was born. He talks about his childhood home, which had an outhouse and no running water. He also discusses what brought his family to Kentucky, and how his family disposed of waste and obtained water. Next, Turner describes his work with Personal Responsibility in a Desirable Environment (PRIDE). He talks about how he disposes of his trash, and why he does not recycle. He then discusses the problem of illegal dumping and faulty septic systems in Southeastern Kentucky. Turner then talks about his work helping individuals who live in poverty. He emotionally describes a home in Rockcastle County (Ky.) without a running water or floor. Finally, he talks about what he feels would encourage students in get involved in Personal Responsibility in a Desirable Environment (PRIDE).
