Interview Summary

Patricia Ann Ryan served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Thailand from 1971-73. She discusses being inspired to join the Peace Corps by President Kennedy. She talks about training in Hawaii and Chiang Mai and tells stories about teaching English at a middle school in Ampawa, a town on the Mae Klong River. She also talks about both her loneliness in Ampawa and the many friends she made there and in another town to which she moved. She also recounts stories about her daily life, traveling in Thailand and Laos during the Vietnam War and reconnecting with students and Thai and Peace Corps friends she made while in Thailand. She also discusses her and her husband’s (RPCV, Fiji) work with Southeast Asian and other refugees in refugee camps in Thailand and the Philippines and in the US, and their fostering 2 Cambodian boys.
