Interview Summary
Dr. Amry Vandenbosch is a retired professor of political science, head of the political science department, and head of the Patterson School of Diplomacy at the University of Kentucky. In this interview he discusses at length his views on university administration in general, and compares the administration at the University of Kentucky to that of the University of Chicago and Iowa State University. He talks about several University of Kentucky presidents, including Frank McVey, Herman Donovan, Frank Dickey, and John Oswald, discussing their views on academic freedom and political influence, and their impact on the university.Vandenbosch discusses the importance of teaching versus research in terms of professors' workloads, and talks about the administration's attitudes toward research. He talks about controversy and the university environment, from debates over evolution, to claims of Communism during World War II, and radicalism during the Vietnam War.
