Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Tanya Ferencak served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic from 1994 through 1996, in the Environmental Education Outreach program. Tanya grew up in a multi-cultural neighborhood and traveled to many places. She recalls seeing a Peace Corps commercial on television and deciding then that she would join after college. Tanya’s group trained in Los Alcarrizos, near Santo Domingo. Training included Spanish language, culture, and job skills. She was posted to La Leonor, a small remote coffee growing community in the northern part of Parque Nacional Armando Bermúdez. Her work involved training teachers and park rangers in environmental education techniques. Tanya easily adapted to the community and enjoyed her time there. She discusses the impact of Peace Corps on the DR, and impact of service on volunteers. After Peace Corps, Tanya traveled extensively through South America for over a year. She returned to the U.S. and worked in community development for many years, and now teaches meditation.
