Interview Summary

Cooper discusses his views of President Harry Truman. Cooper remembers serving as a delegate to the UN under Truman. Cooper fondly recalls his interactions with President Eisenhower. Cooper details his friendship with President Kennedy. Cooper also talks of his trip to the USSR to ascertain the Soviet reaction to Kennedy's election as president. Cooper's role on the Warren Commission is explored. Cooper describes the presidency of Lyndon Johnson. Cooper gives a brief contextual background on the Vietnam War. Cooper illustrates his views on presidential powers during wartime. Cooper provides his opinion of Presidents Johnson, Nixon and on Watergate. Cooper also discusses his impressions of Presidents Ford, Carter, and Reagan. To conclude the interview, Cooper reflects upon the constitutional powers of the president as commander-in-chief.
