Interview Summary

Leland MacPhail is the son of Larry MacPhail, who was the president of baseball teams such as the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Yankees. In this interview, he talks about his father's activities during Chandler's term as baseball commissioner, his father's contacts with Commissioner Chandler, the Marquez-Wilson investigation, Chandler's decision on the case, his (MacPhail's) career, Del Webb, Dan Topping, and George Weiss. He describes his father's role in bringing Chandler in as baseball commissioner, his father's role in Leo Durocher's suspension, his father's relationship with Branch Rickey, a committee report on the first players' pension plan, and the threat of players organizing a union. He discusses the integration of major league baseball, the team owners' resistance to integration, Chandler's anti-gambling policies, an owners' meeting regarding Chandler's status as commissioner, Del Webb's role in Chandler's contract not being renewed, and the "high school rule".
