Interview Summary
Walter D. Huddleston discusses his successful 1972 campaign for U.S. Senate. He talks about first making the decision to campaign. He talks about how George McGovern receiving the Democratic presidential nomination and the fractured Democratic Party affected his campaign. He talks about Wendell Ford's major contributions to his campaign. He talks about campaigning against tough, primary Republican opposition, Louie B. Nunn and charges they made against each other. He discusses his campaign trail, giving a speech at Fancy Farm, Nunn's investigation on a large loan signed by leading Kentucky Democrats (including Huddleston), and the 1972 Democratic National Convention. He talks about his campaign strategies to win the primary and general elections.
