Project: A. B. "Happy" Chandler: The Dr. Charles P. Roland Interviews
Interview Summary
Barry Bingham, Sr. talks about becoming interested in Chandler while working at his family's radio and newspaper company in Louisville, Kentucky. He says Chandler was too focused on advancing his personal political career in national politics to keep the momentum of the first half of his administration. Bingham believes Chandler's ambition caused his first administration to weaken during its second half as he became more concerned with becoming a U. S. Senator. He discusses Chandler's policies during his term as Senator. He talks about Chandler's time as the commissioner of Major League Baseball and his later return to Kentucky politics. He talks in detail about Chandler's policies and accomplishments during his second administration including the issue of taxes, highways, schools, the University of Kentucky medical school, and the desegregation of public schools in Kentucky. He discusses Chandler's deteriorating political career, resulting in his loss in the 1963 gubernatorial election. He gives an evaluation of Chandler's overall impact on the state of Kentucky.Interview Accession
