Interview with Nola Marie Nackerud, February 19, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Nola Nackerud, a deaf interpreter, served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nicaragua, 2001-2007, assigned to education. She remains in Nicaragua working with deaf children today, with the support of an Oregon sister city and a former PCV’s non-profit. Training was in El Rosario. Permanent site was Condega where Nola still lives. Initially she worked in environmental education at four schools. Soon her interest in helping the deaf led her to learn Nicaraguan sign language and to embark on an extensive secondary project assisting deaf children to attend the Condega deaf school. Nola says PC enabled her to open up and connect with people. She was featured in an article by her university highlighting “doing uncommon things for the common good.” Nola says about Nicaragua, "Here people help me as much as I am able to help them in small ways. It brings me great joy!"
