Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Andrew Berman served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Togo from 1967 to 1969 and Benin (Dahomey) in 1968. Andy had a childhood interest in the world and would go to the United Nations on the subway. He joined the Peace Corps as a college junior and spent the summer before his senior year in training to be a math teacher. He went to Quebec for French language training and practiced teaching in Senegal before going to his site. He taught in both a boys and girls school. After Andy’s language skills improved he taught advanced classes. Teachers were required to find an assignment during the summers. In the summer of 1968 Andy went to Benin to work on a WHO smallpox eradication project. He rode a motorcycle with a student translator and vaccine to reach remote villages reachable only by walking paths.
