Interview Summary

This interview with elementary school teacher Lynn Stivers begins with a discussion about her childhood. Stivers talks about when and where she was born. She talks about her family, as well as the moves that her family made as a child. Stivers then describes her childhood home, which was a two-bedroom trailer. She also talks about her aunt talking her into going to college to become a teacher. Next, Stivers talks about what her parents and husband do for a living. She also discusses what she and her brothers and sisters did for recreation, and says that all the siblings had rhyming names.

Next, Stivers moves on to talk about environmental issues. Stivers talks about what the environment was like when she was growing up and discusses how her family disposed of their waste, and how it differed from Chicago (Ill.) to Barbourville (Ky.). Stivers also talks about the lack of recycling programs during her formative years. Next, she talks about the environmental degradation that occurred because of coal mining. Stivers discusses how her trash is currently collected. She also talks about the activities she was able to fund through Personal Responsibility in a Desirable Environment (PRIDE).
