Interview Summary

Abstract for Roger LaBrucherie Dominican Republic, 1970-1971, Agriculture Cooperatives/SBD Roger was raised in the rural community of El Centro, California. He was of the JFK generation. His undergraduate degree from Stanford is in economics and he had begun law school as the Vietnam War was expanding. Having met and been influenced by an RPCV on Christmas break he decided to join the Peace Corps. He was in one of the first Pre-Service Training programs in Ponce, Puerto Rico that included living with a local host family for 12 weeks. It was also one of the first programs that focused on self-selection versus a deselection approach to acceptance for service. Roger’s focus was on assisting agricultural cooperatives and savings and loans in maintaining order to their finances. He was first assigned to Monte Plata, then Sabana del Puerto, and finally the Capital, Santo Domingo. In each case he assisted with the start-up or enhancement of cooperatives’ operations. Roger shared his perspectives on culture, development, and relationships.
