Interview with Hobart Wyatt, July 15, 2001
Project: Appalachia: Landscapes and Forests of Kentucky Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Hobart Wyatt describes his great-grandfather Lemuel Wyatt's farm, which had thousands of acres. Hobart describes the preparations his family would make to go into London, Kentucky and trade wheat and oats for flour. He describes growing sugar cane, honey, various fruits and vegetables, and livestock. He talks about the preservation of food on the farm. He describes playing in the woods as a child, uses for the wood they would gather, as well as wildflowers and chestnuts. He talks about how the area was affected by the Great Depression and the chestnut blight. Hobart explains that while he thinks government protection of the Daniel Boone National Forest has been a good thing, in some cases they are too protective with regard to allowing people to take wood.Interview Accession
