Interview with Jennifer L. Neczypor, October 3, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Jennifer Neczypor served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Vanuatu, from 2009 to 2001, in the Education sector. Her mother had wanted to serve so joining the Peace Corps had been on her mind since childhood. Since she served on an island nation a swim test was part of training. Jennifer was assigned to a school on an island that was evacuated due to a volcano erupting shortly after her arrival. She moved to the island of Espiritu Santo and taught English. The school asked her to teach home ec which included making a canoe and weaving. Lacking those skills, she proposed a drama class. The drama club performed “High School Musical Vanuatu.” Jennifer coached a girls’ soccer team and ran health programs that addressed gender- based violence issues and self- defense strategies. Jennifer has returned to visit friends who consider her to be family.
