Project: Partition's First Generation Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Rahman, a Muslim living in Islamabad, Pakistan, begins the interview by discussing her father's education in Aligarh and who should be interviewed next for this project. Secondly, Rahman's time as a postgraduate student at the all-men's Aligarh Muslim University is recalled. Following this, the interviewee's political involvement with the partition movement is explored, as well as her PhD studies in England and the education of her brothers in Aligarh. Changes to Aligarh Muslim University in the 1940s and 1950s are considered, along with a comparison of the circumstances of Muslims living in India and Pakistan. Then, the goals of the partition are stated, and the subsequent failure to implement them is emphasized. When the history of Pakistan began is established, paired with Rahman and her family's experience with the partition and its transition period. Next, the interviewer shares her own connections to Aligarh, and her own thoughts on living there for work a few years ago. Lastly, Rahman and the interviewer deliberate on who to interview next, using Rahman's social contacts.Interview Accession
