Interview with Lucille Knechtly, July 9, 1979
Project: Frontier Nursing Service Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Lucille Knechtley joined the FNS during World War II as a secretary. She became secretary to Mary Breckinridge and remained with the FNS for fourteen years. She talks about traveling with Breckinridge and relates a number of her experiences. When Knechtley finished college, she became a teacher in the Leslie County area. She remarks upon some local discontent in an FNS matter in the late 1960s and also upon FNS involvement with the Office of Economic Opportunity. While a teacher, Knechtley encountered the situation of school administrators showing visitors a small school rather than the larger new high school. She contributes many observations of the local people as she knew them.Interview Accession
