Interview Summary

J. Basil Raymond, a childhood friend of Happy Chandler, begins the interview by describing what Chandler was like as a boy, and the poverty that he grew up in, and how it affected Chandler. The reputation of Chandler in his hometown of Corydon, Kentucky is discussed. Raymond then talks of Chandler's father, and the sports that Chandler played in his youth. The political rivalry between Chandler and Earle Clements is evaluated. The interviewee also details how Chandler was influenced by the people in Corydon growing up. Chandler's grandfather is then recalled. Raymond discusses Chandler's political career and what made him politically successful. Raymond illustrates his experiences teaching Chandler's half-siblings in Corydon during their elementary school years. To conclude the interview, Raymond and the interviewer talk of the interviewer's job and role in the project.
